Renu Moisture Loc

ReNu Moisture Loc, manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, is a soft contact lens, multi-purpose solution intended for rinsing, disinfecting, cleaning and storing soft contact lenses.

Fusarium is a fungus commonly found in our everyday environment, especially in plants and the soil. It is a relatively rare source of eye infections, but a serious one. It typically enters the eye through some sort of trauma or injury to the cornea, resulting in an inflammation of the cornea, i.e. keratitis, causing pain, discomfort and light sensitivity. If diagnosed and treated late, significant loss of vision can result, sometimes leading to the need for a corneal transplant.

It has been implicated in an increase in ocular Fusarium infections that has occurred in Hong Kong, Singapore and the US. According to the 23 August, 2006 report in The Journal of the American Medical Association¨ “As of June 30, 2006, we identified 164 confirmed case patients in 33 states and 1 US territory.” Its conclusions are stark: “The findings from this investigation indicate that this outbreak of Fusarium keratitis was associated with use of ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. Contact lens users should not use ReNu with MoistureLoc.”

Bausch & Lomb withdrew ReNu Moisture Loc®  worldwide in May 2006. 

Although MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) in the UK are not aware of any increased risk of infection in the UK an increase has been reported in the US, Hong Kong and Singapore.
