In 2005, the banking sector made profits of more than £33 billion - the equivalent of £1,000 a second. It’s estimated that the top four UK high street banks generated £3 billion alone last year from penalty charges which are not legally enforceable. One in five bank customers incur these types of charges, often because of a genuine mistake, but most people just accept that the banks have a right to charge any amount they like.

Some banks can charge customers as much as £118 for exceeding their overdraft limit for just three days. Consumer champion, WHICH?, claims that many banks charge exorbitant rates of interest - as high as 33% APR - on unauthorised overdrafts, and it seems that we face punitive banking charges which are often 10 times greater than those on the continent.

In English and Scottish law, charges aren’t legal if the penalties don’t reflect the actual cost of running your account, and it’s hard to see why sending someone a computer-generated letter costs £30. People should challenge all their bank charges. Everyone is entitled to claim unfair charges going back six years, which in some cases, could come to a significant sum.

Bank charge claims come in all sizes large and small, but you will probably be surprised how much your trusted bank has taken from your account over the years. You may not notice an £20 admin charge here or a £30 overdraft charge there but it soon adds up.

A review of a Lancashire man’s bank statements from a well known high-street bank showed that, under guidance provided by the Office of Fair Trading, he had been unfairly charged a total of £1982.45 over a six year period.

Unfair charges £1982.45

Interest on charges £158.56

Total Value of Claim £2141.01
